What are Essential Oils?

Characteristics of Essential Oils

BERGAMOT

Extremely rich, sweet fruity. Lifts the spirit, but is relaxing. Good for all tense and anxious people. Tends to regulate the appetite. Inhibits certain viruses, in particular the Herpes simplex 1 virus, which causes cold sores. Use alone or with Eucalyptus, as both are powerful anti-viral agents, can be dabbed onto the site of the sore, either neat or preferably, diluted in a little alcohol at the first sign of eruption.

SAFETY CAUTION: Photosensitizer increases the skin's reaction to sunlight and makes it more likely to burn or blister. Should not be used by those who are allergic or have sensitive skin.

LEMONGRASS

This strong lemony smelling oil is not a citrus but a grass that grows to a height of 3 feet or more! Lemongrass has a very long history of use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly against infectious illnesses and fevers. Lemongrass has been found to have a soothing effect on headaches and unlike Lavender, should be diluted in carrier oil before gently massaging on the temples and forehead. It is an excellent remedy for exhausted or tired nerves, it helps to clear sinus congestion and helps immune systems fight bacterial infections to the body system. Also for animal lovers, Lemongrass is a great insect repellent! Add to animals shampoo, or to plain water. Add a drop of lavender with the lemongrass and sponge animal off, this will help eliminate odors as well as fleas and ticks! It can be used in mop water when cleaning tile floors. It's wonderful to use in a burner for the patio to keep flies and other insects away from the area.

SAFETY CAUTION: A skin irritant when used neat on the skin. Use in low dilutions.

CINNAMON BARK

In the hands of a competent aromatherapist, Cinnamon bark oils are used as a stimulant for the circulation, as an antiseptic, as an occasional aphrodisiac. Good for easing arthritis pain, muscle pain and adding heat to the body, but should only be used when highly diluted in a carrier oil. Cinnamon is said to increase your ability to tap into your psychic mind and to increase financial prosperity! Is nice to use in a room diffuser for that soft warm fuzzy feeling.

SAFETY CAUTION: Cinnamon oil is a very hot oil and will burn the skin if not diluted in carrier oil (Almond or Grapeseed oil) when used on the skin. Use sparingly. Do not take Internally for External uses only.

PATCHOULI

This is oil from the sixties! It has a strong, musty, dry earthy, more animal then plant smell, and you either love it or hate it the first smell! Use it in hanging diffusers in the closet! The smell will last several weeks. Patchouli has many valuable uses in skin care: acne, cracked skin, certain types of eczema, fungal infections such as athlete's foot, some skin allergies and dandruff. It has been used in treatment of obesity, as it induces loss of appetite and reduces fluid retention. It is also helpful in all forms of depression.

SAFETY CAUTIONS: Do not use during pregnancy.

EUCALYPTUS

Strong camphor like, balsamic, fresh scent. Soothes inflammation in respiratory passageways, bronchitis, fights viruses and bacteria while easing congestion, also helps asthma. Clears the head especially when used with Rosemary and Peppermint essential oils. Can be helpful for muscular aches and pains, used in massage or bath.

SAFETY CAUTION: May antidote homeopathic remedies. Generally safe to use but "Avoid applying near the nostrils of infants due to risk of spasm of the glottis, due to the cooling effect on the respiratory system."

PEPPERMINT

Cool, clean, fresh and strong is how I perceive peppermint. It has been used since the Roman times and probably by the Egyptians before them for digestive upsets. It is good for colic, indigestion, vomiting and stomach pain. Peppermint helps colds and "flu" especially when used with lavender, Marjoram and other oils. Peppermint can also be used for fever as it induces sweating. Cold compresses of Peppermint used with Lavender applied to the forehead and temples will relieve headache and sometimes migraine.

SAFETY CAUTION: Peppermint should not be used if any homeopathic remedies are being taken, and must be stored away from them as it can antidote them. Do not use Peppermint during the evening hours as it may cause sleep disturbance.

FENNEL (Sweet)

This essential oil has an anise scent and flavor. One of the most important facts about Fennel is that it is anti-toxic oil. According to Patricia Davis its most valuable application is in counterbalancing alcohol poisoning, and it has played an important part in the treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics. It also helps with gout, arthritis, etc, to prevent the build-up of toxic waste in the body which precedes the inflammatory condition of the joints. It is helpful to regulate the menstrual cycle, particularly where periods are scanty and painful with cramping pains. Fennel is used a lot for quick relief of indigestion and nausea. And it also helps to decrease the appetite!

SAFETY CAUTION: Do not use Fennel for young children (under the age of 6), as one of its active principles (melanthine) can be toxic to them, although Fennel is harmless to adults and older children in normal doses. Fennel must not be used by people with epilepsy!

SANDALWOOD

Soft, woody and the scent develops when applied to the skin. Sandalwood has been used in India for thousands of years as a perfume and incense as well as in Ayurvedic medicine. It has been used for at least two thousand years to treat urinary infections. It is good for dry and persistent coughs, and it is very sedative. Sandalwood is used for many different skin types and problems. It can be used to treat acne, oily skin and also for dry dehydrated skins. It also has a long held reputation as an aphrodisiac, and it holds up to such expectations!

SAFETY CAUTION: Do not use during pregnancy.

SWEET ORANGE

Warm and rounded in aroma, like the skin of the orange. Orange blends well with almost any of the spice oils: Cinnamon, Nutmeg or Clove, also with lavender and Frankincense. Orange is good for combating insomnia, and can be blended with lavender or Neroli if used for long term.

SAFETY CAUTION: Do not use during pregnancy.

..

GERANIUM

Strong, fresh green feminine scent. Blends well with Clary sage, Sandalwood, Lavender, Frankincense and Chamomile among other oils. It is balancing, soothing, and helpful in reducing physical reactions to stress. Eases inflammation of nerve endings, wonderful in massage lotion for hormonal balance and for hot flashes. Very useful in treating Jet Lag or imbalances brought on by traveling. Helpful for sluggish, smoker's skin, restores good circulation aids detoxing.

SAFETY CAUTION: Do not use all the time - Sensitizes. Also it can lower blood sugar, should be avoided if you are hypoglycemic.

ROSEMARY

Fresh, strong and vibrant, that is Rosemary's scent. Use it with Fennel to rid yourself of stress and also use it to help you wake up! It is an excellent brain stimulant, and it has an effect on the central nervous system where there is loss of function, such as loss of smell, speech impairment and some temporary paralysis. It is valuable for respiratory problems, ranging from the common cold, sinusitis and asthma. It helps to "clear the head" and works on the physical as well as the mental plane.

SAFETY CAUTION: Do not use during pregnancy or for people with epilepsy.

LAVENDER

Fresh, floral and sweet smelling aroma. Lavender is prized for its fresh, soft fragrance since antiquity. Lavender has many healing properties and is one of the essential oils that you would not want to be without. It can calm a raging migraine and relax a stressed filled body in minutes. Like German chamomile, lavender oil works to help relieve irritability, nervous tension, insomnia, palpitations and high blood pressure. It works wonders for a burn and takes the sting out of insect bites. There are so many uses for lavender that I can't list them all here.

SAFETY CAUTION: Can be stimulating in high concentrations.

YLANG YLANG

Exotic, sweet, heavy and sensual this is the scent of Ylang -Ylang! It is useful in  skin creams for all types of skin, it has a balancing action on the secretion of sebum and it is a lot less costly then Rose and Jasmine. It has the ability to slow down over-rapid breathing (hyperpnoea) and over rapid heartbeat (tachycardia). This can happen when someone is shocked, frightened or anxious, or extremely angry, and the immediate use of Ylang-Ylang can be just the whiff they need!

SAFETY CAUTION: Too high of a concentration or usage for to long can give rise to a headache and nausea.

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils have been referred to as the quintessence of a plant's being. They are natural organic substances, which are produced in various glands and sacs within aromatic plants. Essential oils occur in flowers (e.g. jasmine), leaves and stems (e.g. geranium), seeds (e.g.) fennel), barks (e.g. cinnamon), roots (e.g. cinnamon), fruits (e.g. nutmeg), seed (e.g. grapefruit), herbs (e.g. peppermint), wood (e.g. Cedarwood), grasses (e.g. lemongrass). Needles and twigs (e.g. pine) and resins (e.g. myrrh). Some species such as the orange tree, citrus aurantium ssp. Amara actually produces three essential oils. Petitgrain from the leaves, Orange from the peel of the fruit and Neroli from the flower blossoms.

Characteristics of Essential Oils

1. They are highly volatile, which means they readily evaporate. Each essential oil has its own volatility rate, which is measured on a scale of 1 to 100. Essential oils with a volatility rate towards "1" evaporate very rapidly where as essential oils with volatility rate towards "100" evaporate very slowly.

2. They have a consistency more like water than oil, some oils are more viscous than others are, e.g. Vetiver is very thick while lavender is more like water.

3. They are clear in color with few exceptions. Some exceptions include Rose (yellowish), German chamomile (blue, dark blue), Bergamot (light to dark green) and Patchouli (brown/amber).

4. Essential oils are soluble in alcohol, ether, and fixed oils. They are not soluble in water.

5. Most essential oil is antibacterial.

6. The power of penetration through the skin is great. The time of absorption is between 20-70 minutes and varies depending on the fat content of the individual.

7. Some essential oils are adaptogenic. This implies that the essential oil increases resistance and resilience to stress, enabling the body to avoid reaching collapse. Adaptogenic essential oils aid the body in maintaining homeostasis throughout these stressful periods. Adaptogens support the adrenals.

8. Essential oils are the product of steam distillation only, expression and solvent extractions and effleurage create Essences or maceration creates absolutes.

9. Essential oils are able to be distilled utilizing dried or fresh herbage. The use of dried herbage results in a less vital and less potent essential oils.

10. Essential oils have minimal, if any, unwanted side effects and in fact are known to support and enhance the body's own innate healing capacity.

11. Essential oils are currently being explored as possible secondary medications. This is greatly desired when the primary medication being employed is accompanied by a number of side effects.
